The Full Story

About

The Avalon Research Society was an idea that grew over the last four years. How did this story begin?
We will tell you.
We graduated with Bachelor's degrees in architecture and decided to study social communication sciences for our Master's degrees. During these studies, we concentrated on human communication in traditional
Iranian houses. Home, space, and place became the core of our academic and intellectual journey. We searched a lot to find a professor who is working on the sociology of home to pursue our Ph.D. under her supervision. When we found Dr. Lisa-Jo K. van den Scott's work, we contacted her, and she accepted to be our supervisor during our Ph.D. studies. It was the starting point of the Avalon Research Society! During our discussions about the sociology of space and place with Dr. van den Scott, we saw the need for a space for space-place-time researchers to gather and share. While the Society for Study Symbolic Interaction and the Qualitative Analysis Conference communities provide one venue to study space, place, and time, we believe there is room for a specific space to concentrate on these concepts.
"Who is the Avalon Research Society?"

We respond, "A community of humanities and social sciences scholars who are concerned about studying space, place, and time." We launch this website together with a vision to having all of you – space-place-time researchers – join as part of our team, to enjoy a collegial conversation, and to create mentorship opportunities for others; just as we have enjoyed.

Mission

As a group, we promote an atmosphere of collegiality and collaboration where junior and senior scholars work together and where the voices of otherwise marginalized scholars can be situated.  We accomplish this through our website, which strives to connect people to each other, and to resources around the study of space, place, and time.

Vision

Creating community sustains our research worlds (Adler p.c.).  We endeavour to create and maintain community by highlighting scholars and their work on our website, by putting together workshops (both online and in-person), and by collecting and listing resources so they are easily accessible.  We also support other activities that promote the scholarly study of space, place, and time.
